All Access Mount

20 November: “All Access” Mount – Official Opening by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson

On the 20th November we will be Honoured with the presence of Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson who will do the official opening ceremony of the new “all access” mount we have recent had built.

Please note: This is an SAS members and invited guests only night.

The SAS would like to thank Harry Herron and Dave Beedham who had the initial idea and took it all the way to CAD drawings.

Then the company who manufactured the mount and donated it to the club free of charge. They dont want publicity, so we are honouring their request.

The Newcastle Building Society who gave us a grant of £500 that helped us purchase the telescope. Paul Meade made such a good application to them they granted us the funds.

Stargazing Live - (WWT) 2015

20th – 21st March: Stargazing Live

In suppot of the BBC Two’s Stargazing Live shows on BBC2 on Wednesday 18th, Thursday 19th, & Friday 20th (morning of partial solar eclipse) March, Sunderland Astronomical Society and other invited Astronomical Society’s will be running our own Stargaing Live events on Friday 20th & Saturday 21st March 2015, from 6:30 pm.

Join local astronomers from across the North East for a fun night of assorted astronomical treats at the Cygnus Observatory at the WWT Washington Wetlands Centre.

SAS AGM 2014

Sunderland Astronomical Society AGM

The Sunderland Astronomical Society AGM will be taking place on Sunday 16th November 2014 from 6:00 pm, prompt before the lecture.

SAS members are invited to attend, listen to chairpersons reports and vote in the election of the committee and nominations are asked from the SAS members.

At the AGM all committee members stand down and members are nominated elected/re-elected.

There are a possible 12 committee places, which includes the named officer posts for the chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary, treasurer roles.

The society now supplies SAS Membership Cards to all new & current society members, with a membership card holder and lanyard (if required).

All members are encouraged to use/display membership cards at our meet ups, visits and events.

The printed & laminated membership cards, holders and lanyards are stored in the Discovery Room’s “SAS hobbit hole” and available on request.

Note: Membership cards  will be printed/issued in as/when we get the required batch of new members to keep printing/laminating costs down.


Jupiter Nights: An introduction to Stargazing and Astronomy (at WWT)

Jupiter Nights is part of our annual two night astronomical extravaganza, which also coincides with the Stargazing Live shows on BBC2, and that also promotes the BBC’s local astronomy events on the “Things To Do” website.

Held on Friday & Saturday, 10th & 11th January, from 6:30 pm at  our Cygnus Observatory and inside WWT Washington Wetlands Centre.

For an evening full of assorted treats in the night sky, join our local astronomers in observing the wonders of the universe.
Powerful telescopes will be available to unveil the Moon, the giant planet Jupiter and its four largest moons; the amazing stellar nursery called the Orion Nebula; a gorgeous collection of star clusters including “The Seven Sisters” and “The Beehive;” plus many other wonders of the Universe.
