South Shields Astronomical Society (SSAS) was founded in 1957 and we meet on most Thursdays from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm between September and May in the Lecture Theatre in L Block at South Tyneside College.

The College is located at St. George’s Avenue in South Shields and the car park for L Block can be accessed from Grosvenor Road.

A yearly programme of meetings is prepared by the secretaries and includes speakers from Durham University, local societies and our own members. These talks are usually on a monthly basis and are interspersed with other events throughout the society year.

The society also holds an annual competition for observational work and for practical work to encourage members to display their current astronomical projects.

For more information about the society please contact Christine on 0191 4568584 or email ssas1957@gmail.com
