SAS Lecture: What is Space?

About this event :

We know surprisingly little about the nature of the stage upon which the universe’s great show plays out.

In this talk Graham Darke will take us through the ages, along the way examining humanity’s developing understanding of what space is.

It will bring us right up to the modern era where what we know today is perhaps just as strange, if not more mysterious so, than our ancestors’ view.

 

Talks in Person

This walk will be held at the Washington Wetlands Centre (Discovery Room).

The talk will also be broadcast via MS Teams (providing no technical and/or WIFI difficulties)

Our speaker

Graham Darke as well as the current President of the Sunderland Astronomical Society(SAS), is a very active member of the SAS and ambassador of Astronomy outreach throughout the North East.

Director, Lead Astronomer & Astro photographer (now semi retired) at Battle steads Observatory team
Chris is the astrophotography director at AstroVentures, an expert astrophotographer and astronomy teacher with a passion for Dark Sky objects.

  • President and one of the founding members of the SAS.
  • Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.
  • Active member and very keen supporter of Astronomy outreach through the North East with outreach/talk experience in secondary schools and colleges since early 1990’s.
  • A keen amateur astronomer & astrophotographer.
  • Former Chair of Sunderland Astronomical Society.
