In suppot of the BBC Two’s Stargazing Live shows on BBC2 on Wednesday 18th, Thursday 19th, & Friday 20th (morning of partial solar eclipse) March, Sunderland Astronomical Society and other invited Astronomical Society’s will be running our own Stargaing Live events on Friday 20th & Saturday 21st March 2015, from 6:30 pm.Details
The Sunderland Astronomical Society AGM will be taking place on Sunday 16th November 2014 from 6:00 pm, prompt before the lecture.
SAS members are invited to attend, listen to chairpersons reports and vote in the election of the committee and nominations are asked from the SAS members.
At the AGM all committee members stand down and members are nominated elected/re-elected.
There are a possible 12 committee places, which includes the named officer posts for the chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary, treasurer roles.Details
The next star camp runs from Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th October with spaces already filling up!
The Kielder Forest Star Camps are run twice a year, in the spring (usually in Feb/March) and in the autumn(usually in October).
All activities on the main day (Saturday) are free.

From humble beginnings and as a pre-season event, the annual SAS Starbeque event has now become the stuff of legend. Held on Saturday 29th August 2015, starting at 6:30 pm until late. This is our traditional celebration of the return of darker nights and, as in previous years, will take place at our Millshields Dark Sky…Details
The Cygnus Observatory now has a Skywatcher EQ8 mount – yippee!!. This will considerably help SAS to promote the study of Astronomy in the local community. This has been achieved from the fundraising efforts from members Sunderland Astronomical (you know who you are) & the from kind donation from the Community Foundation’s “Frank Acfield“ Endowment fund.…Details
The society now supplies SAS Membership Cards to all new & current society members, with a membership card holder and lanyard (if required).
All members are encouraged to use/display membership cards at our meet ups, visits and events.
The printed & laminated membership cards, holders and lanyards are stored in the Discovery Room’s “SAS hobbit hole” and available on request.
Note: Membership cards will be printed/issued in as/when we get the required batch of new members to keep printing/laminating costs down.Details
Jupiter Nights is part of our annual two night astronomical extravaganza, which also coincides with the Stargazing Live shows on BBC2, and that also promotes the BBC’s local astronomy events on the “Things To Do” website.
Held on Friday & Saturday, 10th & 11th January, from 6:30 pm at our Cygnus Observatory and inside WWT Washington Wetlands Centre.
